Description

The Supplier will make disabling mental injury (DMI) assessments based on medical records only. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS) was set up in 1964 to compensate victims of violent crime. Before 1996, awards were set on the basis of common law damages. Since April 1996, the level of compensation has been determined according to a tariff approved by Parliament. Following an enactment of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 1995, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) was established to administer a tariff-based compensation scheme in England, Wales and Scotland. The compensation payments within the Tariff of Injuries are intended to reflect not only the physical injuries sustained by an individual as a victim of a crime of violence, but also any temporary anxiety or trauma associated with the incident. There is a separate mental injury tariff for victims where the crime of violence has a substantial adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day to day activities, referred to as disabling mental injury (DMI). Payments are made based on the duration of the adverse effect and must be confirmed by diagnosis or prognosis of a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
