Description
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) is a serious blood disorder with rapid onset, that results in blood clots forming in small blood vessels throughout the body. It affects the kidneys, heart and brain. The condition can be difficult to diagnose because initial presentation can be non-specific, and this is a very rare disease. Rapid treatment is essential for optimal outcomes and includes plasma exchange and a range of drugs. This disease primarily affects adults. Children are treated in paediatric haematology centres with support from the adult specialists. Specialist aftercare is also required. Services are required to have a programme of outreach and education to improve timely diagnosis and referral. There is a small population with a congenital form of the disease who require ongoing treatment and monitoring. Patients need to be able to access specialist care with 24/7 access to apheresis and a specialist team. Patients need to start in treatment within 4/8 hours of a referral to the specialist centre.
