Description
Our vision is that all children in Greenwich are safe, healthy and lead happy and fulfilling lives. We want every child to get the best start in life, to take full advantage of the opportunities available, and for fewer children to be brought into care. Parenting Support and Supervised Contact Services are part of a suite of commissioned services that work alongside the Council and other partners to achieve this vision. The Parenting Support Service involves the provision of parenting support services for families with children and young people up to 18 years of age who are in need of care and protection (as defined by The Children Act 1989). Parents referred to the service may be experiencing a range of difficulties in relation to their parenting skills, that are impacting the health and well-being of their children. The service includes complex cases e.g. families where mental health, substance misuse, (chronic) neglect, domestic violence and various forms of child abuse exist. The service contributes to Social Workers' parenting assessments by providing evidence of their observations and knowledge about the family. The Parenting Service will: • improve parents' parenting skills and where possible prevent the need for children to be placed in the care of the local authority; • provide practical support to families to prevent family breakdown or support during family crisis e.g. taking children and young people out to social activities, mentoring, encouraging positive household routines; • provide practical skills to parents to keep the home safe and improve their knowledge and understanding of parenting; • provide parents practical assistance such as help in completing Benefits Forms and Housing Applications. • empower parents in their roles as care givers and enhance their parenting skills and capacity. Supervised Contact The Children Act 1989 places a duty on the Council to ensure that children looked after have contact with their parents and relatives unless such contacts can be shown not to be in the child's best interest. The Supervised Contact Service enables contact for children who are looked after by Royal Borough of Greenwich or whose care plan or child protection plan sets out the need for contact with family members to be supervised. The Service assists in building and sustaining safe and beneficial relationships between a child and members of their non-resident family. The Service will: • enable service users to cope emotionally and psychologically with contact • provide an opportunity for observation of the contact between the child/parent/relative, which contributes to an overall assessment of the child. • complement the Council's own In-house Supervised Contact Service. The successful provider(s) must be flexible and responsive, and adaptable to the challenges of working during a pandemic. The Service will be delivered mainly from the Council's Contact Centre at Erwood Road, Charlton, SE7 8DR, and other areas
